Throughout the Seventies Roxy had a varied lifestyle. He visited the sets of Coronation Street one day and ended up being offered an extra part of a rough boy. For Four years he was as a bar man in London, then off to Brighton where he also started turning his hand to amateur drag shows which he performed across the London area.
This led to appearing as part of a duo called “Two’s Harmony” which allowed him to develop and travel up and down the country and based himself in Leeds when on tour.
After splitting from the duo act he moved to Manchester in a bedsit, then remembered that he promised himself if ever went solo he would rename himself as Roxy Hart from the hit Chicago. This he duly did and registered the name with equity. From that day on he became known as “Miss Roxy Hart”
Later on he appeared in a show at The Flamingo in Blackpool when it only had one floor, alongside Pussy galore.
In May 1980 saw his first performance as Shirley Bassey which has grown so well through the years since.
After a spell of running a Bar in Manchester he landed another job in television this time as an Asian tranny then it was around Manchester and Wigan he developed his shows. This led to overseas engagements as far away as Hong-Kong and Japan.
Returning to the UK he took up residency Three nights a week in Wigan.
In the Nineties and the popularity of Karaoke he switched to working at Julies Karaoke. In between was involved with amateur cabaret nights and ended up spending Fifteen years at The New Union in Manchester.
Then came his film debut this time with the character as Karaoke Hostess in the infamously popular “Queer As Folk”.
On the 23rd May 2003 he then moved to where he is today at the fabulous and luxurious fun bar on Queen Street in Blackpool which is aptly named for him as “Roxy’s”. During the first year it was hard to adjust to the new place, new friends and a new venue but over the last years it has gone from strength to strength and has became very popular with locals and tourists alike. This is due to the good management and family spirited work force along with Roxy and guests. For most all they see is the glam but for Roxy and the team it is hard work behind the scenes and sometimes need to “Chill” but always remaining professional. |
